College Development Program for Future Leaders

Loss Control Trainee Program

Offering an opportunity to make a meaningful impact early in your career

What does this program offer you?

Loss control is unique for how it bridges business knowledge and technical expertise from other industries and professions, with the business of property and casualty insurance. The Hanover’s Loss Control Trainee Program allows dedicated professionals to develop essential skills, build their confidence and establish a strong foundation from which to launch their career in loss control and underwriting.

How does the program work?

Unlike programs that rush candidates along to leave them with more questions than practical skills, this 9-12 month program combines classroom, on-the-job and self-study training, along with invaluable mentoring by experienced underwriting professionals. The result is a solid, thoughtfully structured path for entering the business and making a meaningful impact early in your career. Trainees are typically given independent assignments between 8 and 10 months into the program.

Who are we looking for?

The primary job of a loss control specialist is to help reduce the risk of injury, accident and material loss in the business setting. Working in the field, loss control specialists inspect offices, shops, warehouses—almost any type of business—and identify potentially hazardous conditions and ways to fix them.

With this in mind, loss control professionals must be extremely observant and detailed-oriented, and able to draw on past experience and knowledge of other areas, including engineering technology, building construction, environmental and health sciences, or safety management. Loss control professionals use their strong analytical and communications skills to produce clear and concise reports, but also appreciate that their job gets them out from behind a desk, working with the company’s field team, agent partners and customers.

What else do we expect?

We have very high expectations of our participants and anticipate their dedication to the program and our company. They should have a sense of ownership in their career development and a commitment to excellence. We also expect them—and all of our employees—to meet the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and ethical conduct.

We are sincere about developing the future leaders of our company. We believe individuals who have these qualities will take advantage of the opportunities offered by our program, and that they will succeed.
