The Hanover Names Gary Kusumi President, Personal Lines

—Kusumi to build on company’s strong market position as preferred total account writer for growing independent agents—

WORCESTER, Mass. (August 15, 2008) – The Hanover Insurance Group, Inc. (NYSE: THG), a leading super regional property and casualty insurance company, announced today that Gary Y. Kusumi has been appointed president of the company’s personal lines business.

In this position, he is responsible for the company’s personal lines operations, including products, pricing, service and underwriting strategies, as well as growth and profitability. Mr. Kusumi will work out of The Hanover’s headquarters in Worcester, Mass. and will serve as a member of the company’s Executive Leadership Team.

Mr. Kusumi comes to The Hanover from GMAC Insurance, where he served as president and chief executive officer of the company’s personal lines business. GMAC is a global Fortune 500 company providing a broad range of financial services and insurance-related products.

Previously, Mr. Kusumi served as president and chief executive officer of the Windsor Group, and president of Leader National Group¾personal lines companies of Great American Insurance Group, Cincinnati, Ohio. Prior to that, Mr. Kusumi served in various senior management roles for the Progressive Companies, Cleveland, Ohio.

Mr. Kusumi is a past chairman of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and served on the safety advisory committee for the United States Secretary of Transportation. He earned a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1971.
